House under Rain Cloud needing Gutter Protection

The Insurance Information Institute recommends gutter protection

The Insurance Information Institute, an industry organization that provides important information to the public, makes these statements on their website at www.iii.org:

  • "Water damage is one of the most common and costly disasters affecting U.S. residences, accounting for billions of dollars in losses to homeowners and renters annually."
  • "Even a small amount of water can cause serious damage to your home."

The effects of water are not hard to believe when you consider that water is one of the most powerful forces on earth. From its ability to carve out a Grand Canyon, to the devastation to lives and property through floods, tidal waves, tsunamis or hurricanes, it is an undeniable force of nature.

The Insurance Information Institute offers tips for homeowners on preventive measures to avoid water damage to your home and its related expenses. These include:

  • "Check your downspouts. Remove debris that may have accumulated in downspouts and rain gutters. Position downspouts so that they direct water away from the house."
  • "Install gutter guards. Gutter guards are the device used to protect the clogging of the roof gutter so that the water from the roof may flow easily and accumulation of water does not take place on the roof but away from the house."

It is not surprising that gutter maintenance and protection is a highly recommended preventive measure against water damage to your home. Consider these facts:

  • From the moment your home exists, even before you may have lived there, an average of 5 feet of water rush over your roof every year. This can be a combination of rain and snow. The snow to liquid ratio is 13:1. This means 13 inches of snow will melt down to 1 inch of water.
  • 80% of gutters don’t flow correctly

When water incorrectly flows or backs up it misplaces on and around your home. This can result in potential damage to your roof, rafter tails, attics, fascia, soffit, walls and windows. It can lead to mold, dry rot, insect infection and ice dams. Ice dams and standing water in gutters are also primary causes of gutter damage.

With these facts in mind, homeowners face three options:

1. Do nothing and risk the potential property damage caused by water
2. Apply a temporary or potentially ineffective solution by cleaning gutters yourself (dangerous) or paying to have gutters cleaned (expensive)
3. Solve the problem permanently and correctly with the right gutter protection
