Wood decks are wonderful for entertaining, playing outside with the kids, and even just relaxing on warm summer evenings. Although a well-built wood deck is a picturesque addition to any home, these valuable outdoor spaces need a bit of TLC.
Home care experts recommend that you clean your wood deck at least once per year, maybe twice if you live in an area that has harsh weather, lots of trees, or attracts mold. In addition to this annual deep clean, it is important to maintain weekly deck care activities. Although this may seem like a lot of work, it will not take too much time out of your day and is definitely worth the effort!
- Once per week, sweep your deck. Make sure that you remove any debris, including leaves, twigs, sand, dirt, etc. Not only will this keep your deck looking great, it will allow you and your family to enjoy a clean outdoor area.
- Once per year, maybe twice, perform a deep clean on your deck. Using a pressure washer and deck cleaning solution (make sure you purchase a solution that is specially formulated for wood decks), remove all dirt, mold, pollen, etc. This may take a bit of patience, but the pressure washer does most of the work for you.
- When necessary, sand and re-stain your deck. This will keep it looking great and will lock out moisture, preventing rot.
If you own a wood deck, you may want to invest in your own pressure washer, as it will come in handy during other home maintenance projects (such as cleaning siding). Although actively cleaning your deck on a yearly basis is a great way to keep it looking new, paying attention to the structures around the deck is important. More specifically, a properly functioning gutter system can help prevent water damage to your deck. Leaf Slugger’s gutter cleaning prevention system can keep your gutters clear and working optimally!
