Spring is a time of blossoming flowers, warmer weather, and deep cleaning. An age-old tradition, spring cleaning allows homeowners to shake out the dust collected during the winter months and start the new season afresh with a clean home. This spring, don’t forget about your gutters when compiling your to-do list!
Why Clean Your Gutters in the Springtime?
With the blooming of plants and the abundance of pollen, springtime releases a great deal of debris into the air. All of this debris floats around your home and, oftentimes, ends up in your gutter system. From gutters to downspouts, this system can quickly become inundated with debris—leaving your home vulnerable to water damage.
Safe Gutter Cleaning
Although cleaning your gutters is a must, it is a dangerous job. For this reason, it is important that you follow directions in order to minimize the risk of accident or injury. Remember, using a ladder is a very dangerous activity.
So, gather your ladder, rake, debris bucket, gloves, rubber-soled shoes, safety goggles, and gutter scoop and get to work!
1. Before attempting to clean your gutters, make sure that you rake your roof to remove any debris that may fall into the gutter system.
2. Using a gutter scoop, slowly and methodically clean out all of the large debris from your home’s gutters. Drop this debris into your bucket.
3. After removing the large debris, use a garden hose to rinse out your gutters. Make sure that you move the remaining debris toward the downspouts. Before this step, disconnect your downspout’s base if it drains underground to avoid a clog.
4. After finishing with the gutters, make sure there are no clogs in your downspouts. Insert the hose into the downspout and turn the water pressure to full. If the water starts to back up, a clog may be present. Push the hose up into the downspout from the bottom to help clear the clog.
